Each year, visitors are invited to watch live births upclose. Chicks, piglets and calves are all born duringthe fair. These up-close encounters help visitors of allages understand the care and dedication that goes intofarming. “What I 昀椀nd really fun about the exhibits ishow much kids are drawn to the animals. The animalsare truly the stars of the show. While it’s important tokeep the space educational, we focus on the animalsand the farmers who are there with them, talking to thevisitors,” Taylor adds.Building PartnershipsOne of the key elements of the Discovery Barnhas been its collaboration with local farmers, college students, and organizations like FFA. Thesepartnerships ensure that the exhibits not only educatebut also foster meaningful interactions between thepublic and those who work on the farm every day.A Decade of ImpactOver the past ten years, the Discovery Barn hasnot only educated, but they’ve also built lastingrelationships with fairgoers and the community. Fromyoung children to seasoned farmers, the exhibithas fostered curiosity, discussions, and a greaterunderstanding of agriculture.“The public response has been overwhelminglypositive,” says Sylvia. “We’ve seen attendance groweach year, and during challenging times, like theCOVID-19 pandemic, the value of what we weredoing became even more evident. People were moreinterested than ever in learning where their food comesfrom and how it’s produced.”“As PIPESTONE continues to evolve and domore agriculture education efforts,we continue to build upon therelationships that Sylvia has built withour partners. They are the experts intheir subject matter.”FALL 2024 | 21
