In the Studio
Three principles shape my practice, and each emphasizes an open-ended
process: development through transformation; form is never more than an
extension of content; the medium is the message.
In the studio the search is for discovery, not only through conception and
perception, but mainly through proprioception — sensibility within the
organism by movement of its own tissue – that is, through the intelligence
of the body.
In the studio my focus is the choreography of the paint across the canvas,
the brush hitting the surface with pigments, one after another, one over
another, to make deep, entwined spaces: intimacies and closures,
gaps and intervals.
A poem, Charles Olson said, is a transfer of energy. A painting also. These
paintings are choreographies of embodied energies, architectures of rimed
encounters with landscape, language, and art.
