Phoenix Festival DIGITAL Playbill 2024 (2) - Flipbook - Page 44
when our souls surrendered to the art of play – now, today, with the help of
artists, historians and digital magicians.
When the Lenape people were displaced by colonizers, the earth felt the
effect. Today, how can we honor collective footsteps walking on the earth,
and honor the Lenape custodians past, present and future on the soil
nurtured for generations? How can we honor our fellow humans? What
extra kindness can we show as guests on shared land? Allow Digital
Dreaming to serve as both an honoring of the land and the original peoples,
and as a space of communal joy among all.
Inspiration for Digital Dreaming came when Festival Executive Director,
Craig Smith and Artistic Director, Elise Stone introduced me to Nyack
author, illustrator, artist, historian, writer and activist, Bill Batson. After
devouring Bill’s collection – Nyack Sketch Log: An Artist and Writer Explores the History of a Hudson River Village – I was immediately enchanted
by Nyack’s rich history. From there, I had the ingredients to create an
audio-augmented-reality-as-accessible-as-possible adventure that would
capture the richness of this community – and remind you, the audience,
how you can daydream/digitally dream on the streets you walk every day,
any day. And show you how you can hold space in your heart for those who
have walked these paths before you, today walk these paths alongside you,
and one day will enjoy these paths after you.
To create this adventure, I needed help from my friends. We enlisted
Phoenix Theatre Ensemble members with vocal and digital storytelling
talents to create a world where you’re invited to immerse yourself, play
and give permission to your inner child to shine through and uplift your
authentic self.
