Director’s Note
Shakespeare in a parking lot is a crazy idea….maybe. But we like to think
of ourselves as Shakespeare in THE Parking Lot, in THE greatest city in
the world, in THE most inclusive, diverse neighborhood in the world, in the
greatest melting pot in the history of civilization. SitPL was started 29 years
ago by Jennifer Spahr who with Robert Spahr founded Expanded Arts, and
continued brie昀氀y by Leonard McKenzie and the Ludlow Ten before the baton
was passed to our stewardship. We have run for almost 20 years carrying the
baton and we are still chugging. Included about 10 years beginning Bryant
Park Shakespeare along the way. This is the sixth time TWELFTH NIGHT
has appeared in the Parking Lot because it is the most New York of all of
Shakespeare’s plays: irreverent, cruel, at times we hope hilarious, bursting
with love and inclusive of all explorers. TWELFTH NIGHT reminds us over
and over we are all one. Seemed like the right call for these days.
