SPOTLIGHT
ON HEALTH AND SAFETY
The HSE have announced that they will be carrying out site inspections throughout October in a
bid to focus on respiratory health. As a company, we ensure that face-fit testing is carried out by
our face-fit trainers. However, with the increase of operatives growing fashionable beards, the
records for face-fit testing have dramatically dropped this year. Dust is still not seen or recognised
on-site as a major killer in construction.
The most common construction material contains stone, sand, rock and clays which can contain
large amounts of Crystalline Silica. When our materials are cut, they can produce silica particles
in the airborne dust which will be too small for the eye to see. We aim to cut materials off-site to
eliminate dust, however we encourage you to be following safe guidance to protect your lungs
if you’re in a situation where high levels of dust are unavoidable. Steps can include dampening
down with water suppression, using vacuums wherever possible and wearing your RPE.
We strongly advise that being face-fit tested is positive step to protect you from dust on-site and
from task specific activities. Dust is still very much present on-site, and if you don’t take the
necessary steps to avoid intake then it’ll have a potentially fatal effect on your health in the
long-term.
If you would like to be face-fit tested – and we strongly advise that you do – then please contact
