Braydon Rutherford's journey with PeacePlayers started with
the local Friendship Games in August 2019 at the University of
KwaZulu-Natal’s Howard College's Old Mutual Sports Hall. He
proved to be a young leader destined for greatness at this event.
While his basketball skills are a nice compliment, he has proven
to be a vocal and solutions-based leader. After being selected
for PeacePlayers South Africa’s local Leadership Development
Programme (LDP) in 2019, he has led initiatives in environments
outside of the programme, which will leave a positive impact for
years to come.
At the time Braydon joined PeacePlayers, he was in grade 10
at Westville Boys High School. While at Westville, he found a
variety of ways to lead. Amongst the best debaters of his age in
the province, he was selected as captain of the All KwaZuluNatal team; in the drama club, he starred in Shakespeare;
then, on the basketball team, he was a team captain. With
PeacePlayers, he was a consistently exuberant spirit, whether
locally in person, or globally, through virtual engagements. In
addition to his personal accolades, he has chosen to invest in the
successes of others as well.
And so, "The Corridor," a leadership project for Grade 9's, was
born. Inspired by his time with PeacePlayers’ Leadership
Development Programme, Braydon aimed to help young people
"establish themselves in a leadership pipeline early in their high
school career, with hopes of sustaining leadership characteristics
and becoming prefects in the future,” says Braydon. The Corridor
was founded at a location within the school that was formerly
called "The Dungeon" for Grade 9's. The Dungeon had a negative
