Nasiphi Khafu has seen all aspects of PeacePlayers programs. She’s spent
15 years in the program with the leadership development program,
the fellowship program in Northern Ireland, and then on to Strategy &
Operations Manager, to name a few. But, unfortunately, few people know
the program as it was and as it remains as well as she does.
Nasiphi, or “Nas” was born and raised in the rural Eastern Cape. At 18,
she made a daunting move to a big city named Durban, a significant
change of pace for a young person accustomed to speaking Xhosa in rural
Eastern Cape. While Nas still has family in Eastern Cape, Durban, KZN
has opened her to the world. PeacePlayers came at a unique point in her
life - just before she lost her parents at age 18. Yet, she never doubted that
she had a family with PeacePlayers. “PeacePlayers provided so many
opportunities for me and allowed me to see the possibilities of life. When
I got to work at PeacePlayers, I found a love for social development and
youth development, and I started seeing how we could use it as power to
combine both worlds. “ Nasiphi says.
The organisation enabled her to overcome adversity. Adversity is
something Nasiphi is familiar with and comfortable with at this point.
Life made her a mother to her younger brother and sister before she
was ready, supporting them with food, money, and clothes. But it only
made her stronger. Along her journey, she’s successfully opened doors for
herself, provided for her family, and inspired young women worldwide.
In 2018 Nasiphi was announced as the Executive Director at PeacePlayers
South Africa.
In radio and tv interviews, she often shares how her view of the power
of sport and basketball has evolved over time. Nasiphi says, “Growing up,
I always loved sports. I played all sorts of sports in the Eastern Cape. But
