Moses and the 12 spies
T
his month, we continue
with the story of Moses
from our Virtual Vacation
Bible School.
Do you remember that Moses,
guided by God, led the Israelites
out of Egypt and away from the
wicked Pharaoh? What do you
remember about the story?
God promised His people that He
would lead them to the Promised
Land called Canaan. When the
Hebrew people reached near the
edge of Canaan, God told Moses
to choose one leader from each
tribe to go exploring (the Israelites
were divided into twelve tribes
or groups). Moses told them, “Go
see what the land is like, and
whether the people there are
strong or weak, few or many. Look
at whether the land they live in
is good or bad, and what kinds of
towns they live in, and whether the
land is rich or poor.”
The men went into the land and
found that it really was a good. The

grapes were so big that it took two
men to carry a cluster of them on a
pole between them. But the people
there were very big and tall, and
the spies were afraid of them. They
were gone for forty days.
When the spies returned, they went
to Moses and Aaron, and the rest
of the Israelites gathered. The men
showed the Israelites the large
bunch of grapes, pomegranates,
and figs. The Israelites became
very excited as they had hoped to
hear good news.
“But” ten of the spies began to
tell the people about the giants
and how fearful they were. They
told of large cities with high walls
around them. “The people who live
there are powerful, and the cities
are strong and large.” Caleb, one
of the spies, said, “Let us go up at
once and occupy it, for we are well
able to overcome it with God on
our side.” He had seen the land for
himself and knew God would give
it to them. The other spies quickly
