THE CASE OF
SUDDEN CARDIAC
ARREST (SCA).
An AED is an Automated External Deobrillator (AED).
Deobrillators are sophisticated life-saving devices
that restore a normal heartbeat by sending an
electric pulse or shock to the heart. They are used
to prevent or correct an arrhythmia, a heartbeat that
is uneven or that is too slow or too fast.
Deobrillators can also restore the heart9s beating
if the heart suddenly stops, known as Sudden
Cardiac Arrest (SCD), a condition that occurs when
the heart unexpectedly stops pumping due
to an underlying medical condition.

Every minute that passes without deobrillation
reduces the chance of survival by 10%.
Using a Deobrillator within the orst few minutes
can increase survival rate to as high as 70%.
AED9s are designed for use by untrained
or brieny trained layperson and contain technology
for analysis of heart rhythms. As a result, it does
not require a trained health provider to determine
whether or not a rhythm is shockable.
