Performance of global stock markets
US equities led the way in Q4, boosted by a flurry of strong corporate
earnings numbers, with the S&P 500 ending 2021 up close to
27%. While European and UK markets also enjoyed a decent
end to the year, emerging markets and Japan were negative. As
outlined, emerging equities have been weighed down by China’s
regulatory pressures and slowing economy, as well as ongoing
concerns about contagion if giant property company Evergrande
defaults on its debts. Japan, meanwhile, ended a volatile year in
the red: while the country is well positioned amid growing concerns
about inflation (having been plagued by deflation for so long),
markets have been hit by concerns around new Prime Minister
Kishida’s plans for wealth redistribution, including potentially higher
capital gains taxes.
