SAWSHARKS
HAMMERHEAD SHARKS
The sawshark, which can live for up to
fifteen years, is so named because of its
long beak-shaped nose armed with teeth.
It has an elongated and slightly flattened
body and has, like all sharks, gills on the side
of its head. There are three sub-species of
sawsharks, which are found in waters close
to Australia, South Africa and Japan. Like
hammerhead sharks, they are under threat
from overfishing.
Measuring from one to six months and weighing between
five and 500 kilos, the hammerhead shark, as you may have
guessed, has a flattened head in the shape of a hammer!
Its snout has two lateral extensions at the end of which are
its eyes and nostrils. This provides him with a very large field
of vision and better trajection. There are eleven species of
hammerhead sharks that inhabit tropical and temperate
oceans of the world. They are currently endangered due to
overfishing.
