4. …A (VERY EMOTIONAL) PHOTOGRAPH

July 1992. I was asked to propose photographs to
Phoenix Breweries’ artistic director for their 1993
calendar. In fact, I was about to finish some attractive
shots of a village called Petit Camp which is in the
neighbourhood of the brewery in Phoenix. This
photograph was amongst those selected in 1989 for
the first Rencontre Internationale de la Photographie
(international photography festival) held in Reunion
Island in Le Port, where I exhibited next to Sebastião
Salgado. In 1994, I was the first Mauritian to exhibit at the
Mois de la Photo in Paris. The photograph was a highlight
of the show.
Here we see Rampersad Mohun (Dada Sadhu) and his
sister in their sugarcane plantation, which only consisted
of about 850 square feet of land. Nonetheless they
carried on. And they were happy, supported by a love for
the soil that feeds us. At the time, he was 92 but he still
went on labouring away at his digging and weeding. What
a man! In this island’s ever astonishing onward path,
every day I come across Mauritians shaping the future of
their country with their blood, sweat and tears. And they
don’t grumble. Happiness often goes unnoticed. That’s
my island!
Tristan Bréville has spent 60 years as a photographer. Author
of a dozen books, he is also the founder of the Photography
Museum in Port Louis, an important cultural institution which,
since 1966, has been archiving and displaying a major part of
Mauritius’ photographic heritage.

…une photo (chargée d’émotions !)

Juillet 1992. Il fallait suggérer au directeur artistique de la brasserie Phoenix
des photos pour son calendrier de 1993. J'étais justement en train de
terminer la photogénie du village nommé Petit Camp se trouvant tout
autour de la brasserie à Phoenix. Cette photo fut parmi celles choisies en
1989 pour la première Rencontre Internationale de la Photographie au Port
(île de La Réunion), où j’ai exposé aux côtés de Sebastião Salgado. En 1994,
je fus le premier Mauricien à exposer pour le Mois de la Photo à Paris. Cette
photo tint la vedette.
Voici monsieur Rampersad Mohun (Dada Sadhu) et sa sœur dans leur
plantation de cannes à sucre. Une plantation de seulement 30 toises (80
mètres carrés) ! Et pourtant ils s’y accrochent. Ils sont heureux. C’est l’amour
pour cette terre qui nous nourrit. Cet homme était alors âgé de 92 ans. Il
piochait, désherbait et labourait. Un homme d’une grandeur exceptionnelle !
Dans cette belle île au destin surprenant, je retrouve quotidiennement des
Mauriciens façonnant le pays de leur sang, de leur labeur, de leurs larmes et
leur sueur. Sans maugréer. Le bonheur est souvent caché. C’est cela mon île
Maurice !
Tristan Bréville est photographe depuis 60 ans. Auteur d'une dizaine de livres, il est
le fondateur du Musée de la Photographie à Port-Louis : une institution culturelle
incontournable qui, depuis 1966, archive et expose une part importante du
patrimoine photographique de l'île Maurice.
