Closer to the land at
Heritage Nature Reserve
Rich in greenery, Frederica Nature
Park Reserve lies in the heart of
the Heritage Nature Reserve,
3,200 acres full of some exceptional
fauna and flora. Having donned
suitable shoes, discover this Garden
of Eden during a two-hour walk.
Departing from the estate’s visitor
centre, climb on board a fourby-four and travel through the
sugarcane to the entrance to the
Reserve, to find a disused sugar
mill, dating back to French times.
Accompanied by a guide, you then
adventure off the beaten track. The
air is pure and it feels wonderfully
peaceful amidst the thick vegetation.
As you walk along, you come across
a delightful variety of endemic
plants, including ebony, bois de
natte and vacoas trees. Gazing at
the sky, you may be lucky enough to
see a white-tailed tropic bird (pailleen-queue) or an echo parakeet.
The wealth of nature in the Reserve
owes much to the conservation
role of the Mauritius Wildlife
Foundation, which seeks to protect
endangered species by creating the
conditions that are needed for their
repopulation.
Does and stags in search of pasture
can be found near streams or on
the flanks of the hills. After an hour
or so’s walking, we come across one
of Nature’s splendours. A waterfall,
L’Exemple, tumbles down into a
stream, the Rivière du Jacotet, which
runs through the reserve. Shaded
by trees, it’s a good place for an
unexpected dip, a delightful moment
to feel at one with Mother Nature. A
little piece of paradise, the Frederica
Nature Reserve reconnects us
with the land, giving us a sense of
groundfullness.
