immensely hard all pre season
and the results are showing.
I am a big believer of doing
everything with a purpose and
looking at the 昀椀ner detail. For
example running for running
sake ust because its pre
season and it needs to be hard
is not something I do. We have
been able to get just as much
intensity and work in by breaking
down rugby movements
and implementing them into
conditioning exercises. When
you then partner these into skill
based drills we are working
under fatigue but still requiring
that high success outcome.
We use the terms, high intensity
and high skill focus and this is
how we set what we are looking
for in our drills, whether we want
to take extra time and slow the
pace for a high skill focus and
taking the time over the skill or
are we partnering high skill with
high intensity to help promote
positive muscle memory and
making good decisions under
fatigue. As I mentioned in an
earlier question our experience
range is great and they are
setting and re setting their
levels almost by the session. The
players understand that when
they do this and set their new
standard, there is their bar, there
is the new minimum standard.
I have been so impressed by
everyone!

Q4. Is there anything you are
particularly focusing on in
training?
The main thing is to make
sure that we are well rounded
in terms of having a high skill
set and being physically 昀椀t to
perform at our best. As touched
on in the prior question being
physically 昀椀t does not mean the
players needing to run miles
to play. This can actually be
counterproductive and doesn’t
focus much on how we move our
body performing the movement
required for the game. We
have been focusing things like
Malcolm’s that involve up downs
during the runs, really great for
top speed work, using our max
aerobic speed and going down
and getting back up off the oor
as quickly as possible. This is
just one example of how we use
conditioning. We apply the same
to our skill based drills, start as
slowly as required to ensure the
skill can be broken down, we
understand why we are doing
it and the outcomes that can
be achieved by doing this well.
ooking at the 昀椀ner details of
understanding outcomes and
giving ourselves the best chance
of winning all the small battles
has been a big focus, for example
in certain areas of the pitch
when we have more numbers
rather than hold the player up,
lets sweep a takedown and have
