WHAT I REMEMBER FONDLY
WAS THE IDEA OF
DISCOVERING NEW ARTIST
AND THE HISTORY OF ART,
IN GENERAL.
I will casually try to incorporate more free time into my daily
activities now and days but that wasn't the case as I was becoming
obsessed with my art studies as a teenager. These years of my life
were reflective of a challenging time and a perspective one with
my interests in full focus. What I remember fondly was the idea of
discovering new artist and the history of art, in general. Around
this same time while in school I was enrolled in art classes per
semester in middle school and high school respectively. This kept
my interest elsewhere while having to finish each school year even
during the summer months. When there was no classes I would
practice for hours on the basics of drawing to pick up new skills
with a pencil. I didn't know much so I remember using a 2B
pencil, which is the standard for writing, to use for starters early
on when first learning then switching to a mechanical pencil. DO
NOT USE A MECHANICAL PENCIL WHEN STARTING OUT.
(ABOVE) ONE OF THE FIRST PAINTINGS OUTSIDE OF CLASS I ACTIVELY WORKED ON. I WASN’T SURE WHAT
THE DIRECTION WOULD BE WHEN I STARTED TO PAINT SO I JUST PAINTED WHATEVER FELT NATURAL AT
THIS POINT. PRETTY BASIC RIGHT?
(ABOVE) I WANTED TO WORK WITH COLORS SO I CHOSE COOL COLORS. SOLAR SYSTEM IS ALWAYS A
COOL CONCEPT IN MY OPINION. AGAIN JUST A BASIC PIECE TO GET ACCUSTOMED TO CONTROLING MY
PAINTBRUSH
The mechanical pencil was another choice because I started to
use them for notes during middle school. While I love them to
take notes, it's not great for drawing because of the mess it
leaves behind on paper. Plus at this time art materials were
standard and I didn't know that pencils came in variations for
shading and outlining. Art class didn't emphasize which
materials were more important so I went a while before I found
out about more detailed descriptions for various art tools. Even
the general paper I used was a reflection of my inexperience as I
used notebook paper or plain white paper for years. I don't think
I had a proper sketchbook until high school. I would often use a
make shift notebook I made from a binder and some paper I
could find. Just generally investing the time to learn how to
maintain my skills acquired came with sketching everything of
interest to me especially comic book panels.
