At 21 I remember how excited I became because I finally felt like my practice with painting was working. The breakthrough
was me finally mapping out what the canvas could provide for my themes. I still use this technique today but not as often.
Most artists do this as well but before marking up a white canvas I will literally draw on loose paper or use my sketchbook to
sketch ideas. I was strict with this before even starting a painting since I still didn't yet have that confidence to just paint right
away on the canvas. I would spend hours compiling ideas into sketches of the most obscure stuff that mostly was half ideas.
The color was thoroughly planned out and often until each sketch/color was a completed realized idea I would never start any
paintings. Eventually I learned to rely more on my instincts than the drawn-out map or concept. So, what did I make in this
time period? Let’s see……

[STORYTIME] THIS WAS THE FIRST PIECE THAT
ACTUALLY WAS INTERPRETED FROM AN ACTUAL
SHADOW ON THE WALL. THE NIGHT LIGHT
LUMINATED THE ROOM ONE EVENING AND QUICKLY
MY BRAIN IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT OF AN IDEA. I
QUIETLY SKETCH IT IN A SMALL FLIP PAD BY MY BED.
I OFTEN KEPT A SMALL NOTEPAD WITH ME IN CASE
AN IDEA CAME SUDDENLY BECAUSE IDEAS HAPPEN
IN THE MOST UNEXECPTED PLACES AT THE MOST
INCONVIENT TIMES OFTEN. :)
[STORYTIME] I OFTEN WOULD VISUALIZE MOVING
LIGHTS IN MY MIND AS IF AN LITERAL DAYDREAM
WAS COMING TO LIFE. THESE LIGHTS VISUALLY
DANCED IN A FREQUENT BUT IDEAL PACE. THERE WAS
NO IMAGE BUT VIVID COLORS SO I STARTED TO
IMAGINE WHAT IF THE LIGHTS ACTUALLY FORMED
IMAGES. I THOUGHT OF THIS AS ACTIVE CLOUD
WATCHING IF I HAD TO DESCRIBE IT IN REGULAR
TERMS. WHAT ANIMALS DO YOU SEE?
