Designing of spaces for people to
share with plants is a marriage of art
and science. Artistic planting design
demands horticultural knowledge,
the compositional vision of the
sculptor, the spatial expertise of an
architect and the restraint of a poet.
Plants are like the paint on a canvas.
Trees can stand in for the shelter
of a building; shrubs can define
boundaries and screen views like
a wall. Flowers decorate like bright
pillows; turf and ground covers are
like carpets in a room.
