E CO L OGICAL & CULTURAL RESTORAT ION
Ecological & Cultural Restoration
Ecological and cultural restoration is about reclaiming
what was lost and forging a future rooted in sustainable stewardship and regenerative practices.
Indigenous Peoples like the Tlingit, Runa, Winnemem
Wintu, and Maskoke lead the way in restoration - ecological, cultural, social, spiritual, and economic. These
things do not happen separately - like a basket, they are
woven together to create a strong and beautiful container within which life can be held. The fruits look like
new fluent speakers of endangered native languages,
vital ecosystems, climate-positive built environments,
flourishing food systems, community members dancing in ceremony, and smiles on children’s faces as they
look into the eyes of an elder. To do so, these communities and many more are integrating traditional knowledge with modern technology as they heal lands and
lifeways degraded by settler-colonial activities.
Regenerating ecology and culture is no
small feat. Complexities like master planning, skill building, governance, navigating building code and policy, fundraising,
growing food, sourcing materials, and
operating a regenerative system within
an extractive landscape all exist on the
road to success. As these pioneering Indigenous communities demonstrate, the
path to healing and sustainability requires
bold action and collective commitment.
Now more than ever, we are committed to
supporting and amplifying these initiatives.
