Lamalama Ka Ulu
Lamalama Ka Ulu (LKU) is dedicated to the holistic support
of Hawaiʻi’s lands, culture, and people, striving to enhance
health and well-being from before birth through to the end
of life. The organization is rooted in a deep commitment to
the liberation of the homeland and its people, generational
healing, righteous relationships, and unconditional aloha. This
commitment is reflected in their holistic and all-encompassing
approach to community support.
Originally a grassroots effort, LKU of昀椀cially became a 501(c)
(3) organization in 2021. With substantial support from One
Small Planet through a multi-year capacity building grant, LKU
has expanded its reach and established a land-based healing
center that serves the local community.
LKU envisions the restoration of a living ahupuaʻa village system, where the healing of the land and people occurs simultaneously. In April 2023, LKU secured stewardship of 5.5 acres on
Hawaiʻi Island, marking the beginning of their long-term goals
with the implementation of various healing and educational
services. This support has enabled them to donate nearly
10,000 pounds of food, engage in ceremonial sovereignty to
address historical harms, host restorative gatherings for healers and practitioners, plant ancestral staple foods and native
trees, begin their Food Forest project, and respond to urgent
community needs, including those arising from the Lāhainā
昀椀res. Additionally, they have sponsored multiple indigenous
educational opportunities.
LKU 昀椀rmly believes that true liberation is intertwined
with the health of communities, which encompasses
water, land, environment, knowledge, and people. By
focusing on ʻāina restoration and expanding access
to healing practices, LKU aims to empower communities across Hawaiʻi to tackle the layered impacts of
colonization and achieve holistic well-being. Their
work is essential to creating thriving, interconnected
communities across Kō Hawai’i Pae ‘Āina. E ola!
