How did you get into wildlife and
nature photography?
I started to dive in order to take
underwater photos, and I began to
use a small Olympus µIU 710 with its
underwater housing: equipment I still
have. That’s where it all started.
photographic discipline, long walks
with my kit are often required so it’s not
practical to be weighed down for many
hours; and it’s not always possible to
use a tripod, either. For me, not having
to use such heavy equipment or pack
extra is so important, but I cannot
forget the sharpness and quality
of the M.Zuiko lenses, which, when
combined with the E-M1X technology
– specially designed for nature and
action photography – make the results
so impressive and very satisfying; even
capturing aspects of wildlife that would
otherwise go unnoticed by the human
eye, thanks to Pro Capture Mode.
What are your current main bodies
and lenses?
I shoot mostly with the OM-D E-M1X,
M.Zuiko 300mm F4.0 IS PRO, M.Zuiko
40-150mm F2.8 PRO with MC-14 and
MC-20. And I’m looking forward to
using the new M.Zuiko 150-400mm F4.5
TC1.25x IS PRO!
Olympus kit is thankfully so
lightweight, and the stabilisation
in-camera is excellent, which makes
it the perfect equipment for wildlife
and nature photography. In this
Talk us through some of your
favourite photographs.
Last year during a trip to Kenya I was
lucky enough to witness one of the
44
most impressive spectacles that nature
has to offer. At the Mara river crossing
you can find thousands of wildebeest
crossing, but it is unpredictable to
know when it will occur; they may
spend days on the river bank and
decide not to cross, but when they
do, the sound is deafening! The
earth shook, and I did too with such
excitement (1)! I used my E-M1X and
40-150mm F2.8 PRO.
When in Florida waters, in the
United States, I took an image of a
young manatee (3). While diving with
these fiercely protected animals, you
can’t use flash and you must keep
your distance at all times, but this little
guy was very curious and constantly
approaching my camera, which
allowed me to take this picture using
the Olympus underwater housing on
