Challenge of War in Ukraine with Dr ⸀ Joe Roach
Monday, June 9
10:00 – 11:30 a ⸀m ⸀
Marty Theater, Michel Student Center
The U.S. election has brought signi昀椀cant changes
in the Ukraine War as well as the U.S.-NATO
relations. It may be a cause of proliferation in
“tactical nuclear weapons.” Ukraine is what
specialists refer to as a “Nuclear Threshold
State,” meaning fully equipped to move swiftly
toward Tactical Nuclear Weapons. Fear of Putin’s
expansionist plans into the Baltic space, and a
belief that one cannot trust the current American
administration is requiring a European rethink of
all options. Though the pathway to peace seems
to shift weekly, the realistic options need to be
examined here. Dr. Roach, Bradley University
Emeritus History Professor and former Director of
Bradley’s International Programs Of昀椀ce, will help
us determine the answer: it might be “no war, no
peace,” as in Korea since 1953.

Symbiosis between Plants and Microbes:
Who is Talking to Who in the Soil
Tuesday, July 22
10:00 – 11:15 a ⸀m ⸀
Peoria Next Innovation Center
Many plants, like soybean and peas, form
bene昀椀cial symbiosis with bacteria in the soil. The
nitrogen-昀椀xing bacteria provide the plants with
their own source of nitrate which allows them
to grow in harsh conditions. The way that these
plants and microbes recognize their partners is
a fascinating story of chemical biology, and may
one day be the future for our major crop plants.
Dr. Neil Price, retired research chemist for the US
Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research
Service will tell you all about symbiotic plants, and
how they communicate with each other.
$15 – Includes presentation, snacks, and coffee.
