Back to the 80s: Coming of Age on Film
Wednesdays, July 2 – 30
1:30 – 3:45 p ⸀m ⸀
Peoria Next Innovation Center
We survived the decade of yuppies, mall rats,
punker rockers, and new wave music. We
witnessed the launch of CNN and MTV. We were
stunned by the eruption of Mount St Helens, the
Exxon Valdez oil spill, and the AIDS epidemic.
During this time, a new generation of Hollywood
writers and directors captured the anxieties of
the era, portraying them through the eyes of
authentic teenagers. Join us to explore comingof-age stories from the 1980s through 昀椀lm. Movies
are available for rent on Amazon Prime or may be
available at your local library: The Breakfast Club
(7/2), Back to the Future (7/9), Boyz in the Hood
(7/16), Risky Business and Wall Street (7/23), and St.
Elmo’s Fire (7/30)
$45 – Facilitated by Diane Hocker; Gary Nelson,
and Randy Wilson, all movie buffs and frequent
OLLI facilitators. (NG/RFs)

year, or it may whet the appetite for one or both
to land in the 2025 postseason!). Participants will

1:00 – 3:30 p ⸀m ⸀

Travel back to the 1960s and gain a deeper

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns
Goodwin’s memoir, An Un昀椀nished Love Story: A
Personal History of the 1960s. This study group
will offer fresh perspectives on political 昀椀gures of

Each week, we will also explore different aspects
of 1960s culture. Participants will be encouraged
to create their own “boxes of memorabilia” to
share with future generations—your children and
grandchildren. For those who came of age in
the 1960s, this will be an unforgettable journey of
reliving and rediscovering the signi昀椀cance of that
momentous decade.
