Jono’s Story
• 24 •
Meet Jono, a third-year student
and part-time builder from
Tauranga who hopes to reduce the
stigma around self-care for kiwi
men through chiropractic.
Teen Aspirations
It was Jono’s mum who 昀椀rst introduced him to
chiropractic, taking him to a local chiropractor
at age 13. While he had no health issues to
report, his mum wanted him to experience the
bene昀椀ts of chiropractic for himself. Already
interested in a potential career in the health
and wellbeing 昀椀eld, this positive introduction
became a launchpad for Jono’s chiropractic
ambitions.
Ditch The Comfort Zone
Jono’s biggest piece of advice to anyone
considering a quali昀椀cation through the NZCC
is to get outside your comfort zone. “Go and
visit local chiropractors and ask questions,
get used to talking to people about your
passions and beliefs around chiropractic and
get 昀椀rst-hand experience of what life as a
chiropractor is like. Challenge yourself and you
will be rewarded.”
While there is huge support available from
peers and the NZCC staff, students need to
be prepared to hold themselves accountable,
manage their own time and 昀椀nd their own
balance. He recommends anyone applying
does so with a clear idea of what they want to
achieve and why.
Teamwork Makes The Dream Work
De-Stigmatising Self-Care
Jono says there is a noticeable difference
between the NZCC and other tertiary
education providers. “My chiropractor
suggested I apply to the NZCC, not only
because it’s in New Zealand, but because it’s
more bespoke and personal.”
He says the small size of the College means it
has a real family feel and the camaraderie born
in the early weeks at the College continues
throughout the course.
When he’s not studying, Jono works as a
builder and through his work has met many
builders and tradies who would bene昀椀t hugely
from chiropractic care. “I have worked with a
lot of tradies who I know would bene昀椀t, but
there’s a stigma around self-care and the ‘she’ll
be right’ mentality which I’d like to help them
overcome. I’ve spoken about chiropractic to
many of the builders I work with, and they are
surprised to learn that chiropractic care may
help their body adapt to the impact and stress
caused by the physical nature of their job.”
