Wild coho are not allowedto be kept keeping thoseruns going so be sure toonly keep clipped silvers. This is also a staging areafor chums and in the salt, they can be misidentifiedeasily as their purple barsare light and sometimeseven non-existent this timeof year. Chums must bereleased so be sure to lookat the fish closely and knowwhat you have caught.MARINE AREA 4, the lastof the “ocean” areas had arough start to the chinookfishing. As of July 11th, only25% of the quota had beencaught which normallythat time of year the quotais getting close to beingfilled. I fished this area onJuly 12th and 13th, whenthe daily limit of chinookwent to 2 per day and wedid not hook a single adultchinook. The seas wererough and kept my little 18foot boat limited to trollingalong the kelp line andnear shore but those thatcould make it further outdid well. This indicated thechinook were here but outdeeper than usual. Cohowere being caught but notin respectable numberswhich could indicate a laterreturn this year which isgreat since area 5 to theeast is slated to be openinto October for coho.Come August the rules forchinook change in MarineArea 4 with it only beingopen west of the BonillaTatoosh line. Coho is slatedto remain open until midSeptember in all MarineArea 4.Regardless of where youdecide to go, be sure tohead out to the open oceanfor some great fall salmonfishing. Of course, beforeyou go be sure to check theemergency regulations asthese fisheries are subjectto quotas and can closequickly. They can also openor be extended as well andjust maybe you will finda bonus opportunity outin the ocean. Either way,be ready for some cold, wet, and rough weather aswell as bring sunscreen asafternoons are known toburn off the fog and remindus it is still summertime.
