accountant telephoned Mr Spence and soon deduced the forgery. Without even leaving
the box, the jury found Weldon guilty on all charges and he was sentenced to four
years hard labour. Once again Weldon was imprisoned and duly photographed by
authorities. By this time, Weldon had at least nine aliases.
Weldon was photographed at Parramatta Gaol in 1908 just prior to his release.
This is the last time he appears in the NSW Gaol Photographic Description Books,
1870-1930. He then left NSW to try his luck in Charters Towers, Queensland, but was
once again arrested for false pretences and uttering. In 1916 while serving in the
Australian Imperial Force, Weldon was convicted of false pretences and sentenced to
two years gaol. The judge noted that Weldon’s aggregated sentences totalled
twenty-eight years and that this made him on the verge of being declared a habitual
criminal.
