Flynn and Roach pleaded guilty, and in sentencing the duo, Justice Innes said
that the punishment for stealing from a dwelling was fourteen years penal
servitude. However, he could not send boys of such an age to gaol. He said that what
Flynn and Roach wanted was “a good thrashing” and advised their parents—
“respectable residents of the district”—to take better care of them in the future.
Justice Innes fined Flynn and Roach £100 each and placed them on a three year good
behaviour bond with a surety of £100, which was paid in Court by the boys’ fathers.
Christopher Flynn and John Roach do not appear again in the NSW Gaol
Photographic Description Books, 1870-1930.
