Kiama Public School — Demolition of School Aesidence.

This vested residence constructed in about 1900 stands within
the grounds of the infants' department which is on a separate
site. This site of only two acres is very restricted being
triangular in shape with the streets on two sides and the railway
line an the third. A great deal of attention has been given
to the possible means of extending and improving the playing
area with limited success. A proposal is at present under
consideration to remove a number of old free standing timber
buildings from the site and to construct a modern classroom block,
for the enrolments at the school are subject to a gradual but
steady increase. Unfortunately the position of the vested
residence has prevented extension of the school grounds in the
most suitable manner. Reference to the attached sketch shows
the existing school buildings, buildings already proposed for
demolition, the future classroom extensions and the residence.
The Principal who was planning to retire in the next two
or three years, died two weeks ago. He is survived by hiswidow and she has indicated that she will vacate the residence
as soon as practicable.
The dwelling could not cOntinue in permanent use until
extensive repairs are undertaken and it would be reasonable to
expect to spend up to about $5,000.00 to raise the condition
of the building to an acceptable standard
It is requested that pending approval by the Minister to
demolish the residence any advertisement which invites applicants
for the vacant position of Principal does not offer the residence
for occupation by the incoming teacher. Instead, the dwelling
should be demolished and the site levelled to provide an
additional recreation area.
It is RECO-I:If:El:MED that approval be given Zor:1. The vested residence at Kiama Public School to be demolished
and the site levelled.
2. The primary Registrar be informed that the position of
Irincipal should be advertised without offering
