A committee appointed by the Parents & Citizens
Association of the Kiama Primary School has asked me to
write through Departmental channels requesting that the
Minister invite the Premier, Hon. T. Lewis (who is also
member for this electorate), to open the new Library/
Classroom block currently being constructed at Kiama
Primary School. The building is now nearing completion
and should be ready for occupation in June. Projected
suitable dates for an official opening function would be
any of the following, October 21, 22, 23 or October 28,
29, 30.
The committee has also asked that the new Library
block be named "The Stephen Frew Memorial Library" as a
mark of respect for a former Principal who died in
November, 1970 whilst occupying the position of Principal
of this school.
The late Stephen erew iiu.une position of Principal
of the school for the sixteen years preceding his death
and was held in very high regard by the community both as
an educator and as a prominent citizen. It was during the
latter part of his stewardship that the School's library
was founded. In 1971, shortly after his death a previous
application was made to have the School's library named as
above, but this application was referred back to the
P & C of that time advising that the request be re submitt
at a future date as too little time had then elapsed since
the death of Stephen Frew. Indications were at that time,
that sympathetic consideration would be given to a sub—
sequent application. It is considered that this naming
would be appropriate concurrent with the opening of the
building.
A preliminary contact has been made with the
Departmental Public Relations Officer ror avice in
conneci,ion with the above proposals.
