SUBJECT:

The District Engineer has now submitted his report on
this matter as follows:—
This matter was discussed with Mr. Ebert the Area
Director some time ago and an inspection or the area proposed
to be acquired for school purposes was subsequently made.
During the course of the inspection the matter was
discussed with several interested persons from Tueed Heads and
there seemed to be some doubt as to the availability of the
land selected by the Area Director and the School Inspector.
The matter was than relerred to the District Surveyor
at Grafton who advised that the portion required namely portion
219, Parish of Terranora, County of Rous, is being designed for
sub—division as home sites, "however disposal will be held in
abeyance pending further advice from you."
An inspection was made of part of portion 220, portion
219 and part of portion 218. Portions 220 and 218 are freehold
and portion 219 being Crown land would therefore appear to be the
best prospect. Portion 219 has an area of 20 acres excluding the
drainage reserve 50 links wide on the eastern end of the area but
the Area Director advised that this would not create any concern.
However it is considered that it should be drained either by pipe
or covered drain. The ground is generally level sandy soil and is
reasonably heavily timbered with box mahogany, bloodwood and ti—
tree. The plan shows a section to the South—West of the area
as being low swampy country. This was not noticed at the time of
the inspection and there had been considerable rain for many months
prior to that date. Actually in the Tweed District during 1954 the
rainfall was probably the heaviest for a great number of years.
It is considered that the area in question namely portion
219 would be quite suitable for the construction of a school and
wouleihave ample area for playing fields. The only improvement
v,hich appears necessary at the moment is the construction of a
covered drain for a distance of approximately 7-1/2 chains and
the removal of such timber as is required for the school building
and playing areas.
