TWESD HSADS SOUTH.Proposed New High School. The Director of Education, Lismore Area, has indicated thata separate new High School is essential at Tweed Heads, to be occupiedin 1960. The only site available is that at Tweed Heads South. The existing central School has developed steadily and isstill growing. There were 3 classes - 75 pupils, in 1951, but there arenow 7 classes - 246 Secondary School pupils. Fourth and fifth yearclasses have been established and continue to be supported to the pointwhere they must be separated and not taught together. The GeneralActivities class is also too large, whilst the First year intake for 1959and subsequently, assures a three form entry. The existing accommodation is quite inadequate and overcrowded. The growing number of Infants' and Primary pupils will occupy allaccommodation vacated by Secondary pupils, with one exception. Thus it isproposed that the isolated double timber Metalwork Room be transferred tothe site of the proposed new High School. The following Schedule of Accommodation provides for a schoolof 10 classes. The prospects are, however, that this locality will developmuch more owing to the scale of land development and building which is nowevident. while much of this is certainly tourist development, it willnevertheless support an increased permanent population. An allowance forthis prospective growth is made in the Schedule so that the GovernmentArchitect may plan accordingly.Schedule for a school of 10 classes and 400 pupils, half of eachsex. The total of 400 pupils is stated as a guide to the septic seweragesystem which should be provided initially. The staff would total 15 teachersof whom 5 would be women. A school growing to 400 pupils would need a staffof 20 teachers.Classrooms:5, of which 3 should be "A" type,Science:2 Science Laboratories, of which one would be for Biology;Preparation Rooms and Dark Room.LibrarIs1 Type IVA2 General Activities classrooms in the customary suiteArt Room + StoreRoom + StoreGeography119me Science: 1 Kitchen 4. alcove 4. laundry + pantry + store + change room.Needlework room + fitting room + store1 composite Kitchen-Needlework roome, nual Training: 1 Metalwork roan (to be transferred from existing school)Woodwork room + Store1 Technical Drawing room + StoreAmenities:Toilets for each sex (septic sewerage), shelter of large areain this met climate, food service unit type VC, hand basinsand drinking facilities, Incinerators.
