TWESD HSADS SOUTH.
Proposed New High School.
The Director of Education, Lismore Area, has indicated that
a separate new High School is essential at Tweed Heads, to be occupied
in 1960. The only site available is that at Tweed Heads South.
The existing central School has developed steadily and is
still growing. There were 3 classes - 75 pupils, in 1951, but there are
now 7 classes - 246 Secondary School pupils. Fourth and fifth year
classes have been established and continue to be supported to the point
where they must be separated and not taught together. The General
Activities class is also too large, whilst the First year intake for 1959
and subsequently, assures a three form entry.
The existing accommodation is quite inadequate and overcrowded.
The growing number of Infants' and Primary pupils will occupy all
accommodation vacated by Secondary pupils, with one exception. Thus it is
proposed that the isolated double timber Metalwork Room be transferred to
the site of the proposed new High School.
The following Schedule of Accommodation provides for a school
of 10 classes. The prospects are, however, that this locality will develop
much more owing to the scale of land development and building which is now
evident. while much of this is certainly tourist development, it will
nevertheless support an increased permanent population. An allowance for
this prospective growth is made in the Schedule so that the Government
Architect may plan accordingly.
Schedule for a school of 10 classes and 400 pupils, half of each
sex. The total of 400 pupils is stated as a guide to the septic sewerage
system which should be provided initially. The staff would total 15 teachers
of whom 5 would be women. A school growing to 400 pupils would need a staff
of 20 teachers.
