40OPERATING BOX—lf and when moving pictures are
exhibited in the premises, the following requirements will need
to be complied
(a) The minimum size of box to be
0 ft by 8 t. Rewinding operations must not be carried out in
operating boxes when the public
are present but may be carried out
in an approved room set aside for

doors must open outwards and
be made self-cosing with spring
action fitted with ball catches to
keep doors in position after
closing The internal faces of exit
doors to be lined with 4-inch
asbestos mill-board and galvanised
flat-iron. Door frames. to be
treated -in a similar manner. All
iron to be screwed ,into position.
In all cases two means of escape
are to be provided from the
operating box. In instances ,where

on to properly-formed floors, galleries or landings connecting with
stairs. Ladders are not permitted.
The operating box to be made
of fire-resisting construction, including ceiling and floor. In the
case of wood-framed structures,
lining with 1-inch asbestos mill'board and with g-alvanised flatiron over same will suffice. All
iron to be lapped at joints and
screwed into osition. Openings
for projection and observation purposes must not exceed
8 inches by 8 inches, as provided for in Regulation 100,
and these openings to be provided with a system 'of
metal shutters hung with light cords led over pulleys
to a convenient position near each exit door arranged to
operate instantly from either doer when cords are
released from a simple device, and so close openings in
event of fire in the box. For shutters, see marginal
sketch.
Loose electric wire installations are not permitted.
The whole must be thoroughly fixed and insulated in an
orthodox manner.
The operating box is to be provided with exhaust tube
ventilator and smoke escape of galvanist.(1 iron 18, inches
in diameter. The tube is to terminate on the underside
of the ceiling line of the biograph box, the jointirrg to be
smoke-proof, and the tube to be situated directly over
machines; or, in the case of mont than one machine,
with a hopper mouth large enough to serve both
machines, in lieu of providing two tubes. The tube is to
be carried up above the main roof, and is to be fitted
with an exhaust cowl. Subject to approval, tubes may
discharge elsewhere . into 4 the open air in an approved
manner. lf required, small vent tubes may connect
between the machine's lamp house and the 8-inch vent
tube, provided they are fixed in such a manner that the
large vent will not be obstructed.
In the case of existing and new operating rooms where
talking equipment is installed and screening or observation ports are covered with glass, provisi( n must be made
for permanent intake ventilation drawn directly from the
outer air. in the case of wooden-framed walls orhollow
wall construction, iron or eathenwarc tubes are t4)
connect between the internal and external faces of the
walls. There should not be less than three vents in each
operating room in a position about 2 inches above the
floor ine each vent to be not more than 4 inches in
height nor more than 15 inches in length. The vent
where discharging into the biograph room is to be
covered with ;I-4 -in. mesh wire, protected by a suitable
grille. The wire is to be kept clean.
One fire extinguisher (see Item No. 11, Clause (0 1, one
fire bucket, and a blanket are to be provided in the
operating box.
In no circumstances shall spools of a greater capacity
than 2,000 feet of film be used in the exhibition of cinematograph pictures.

There shall not be on the premises more cinematograph
film than the equivalent of two full programmes. Ail
film, when not actually passing through the lantern, shall
be kept in on-combustibe metal cases provided with
automatically closing doors sufficient to effectually
prevent ignition of films contained therein, and such
,Ases shall be kept in the biograph room constructed in
accordance with the requirements of the Reguations.

Operating boxes mug be thoroughly clean and free
from all litter, etc.
(h ) All machines must be maintained in full repair cnd co
on least liable to cause danzage or stoppage in passing
of film through machine. Any cinematograph machine
found to lie in a condition other than mentioned shall be
considered unfit for use until placed in thorough repair.
Cleanliness and detailed inspection of cinematograph
machines and operating boxes shall be the first care of
Cinenzatograph Operators. The licensee shall be held
entirely responsible for the proper and safe use of the
apparatus.
2. FIRE APPLIANCES GENERALLY-- Fire-khting appliances are to be in accordance with
Regulations 74 and 78, and are to meet with the approval
of the Fire Brigades authorities. The approved schedule
of fire appliances for halls seating from 1 to 500 persons
is as follows:-Seating Capacity—
to 150—One 600-gall1n tank (if no other pe
manent water supply), 3 fire buckets
and 1 extinguisher.
151 to 250--One 600-gallon tank 6 fire buckets,
and 1 extinguisher.
251 to 350--1ne 800-gallon tank 6 fire' buckets,
and 2 extinguishers.
351 to 500---1ne 1000-gallon tank 6 to 8 fire
buckets and 2 extinguishers.
For supper rooms attached to halls: —
eating Capacity—
to 150—Two additional fire buckets.
151 to 250—Three additional fire buckets.
251 to 350—Three additional fire buckets, awl
extinguisher.
351 to 500—our additional fire buckets, and 1
extinguisher.
Where town water supply is available and when so
directed hydrants and fire services to be installed to
meet the requirements of the Fire Brigades autorities.
