LENARDS'
PICTURE CO.
practically worked out. The Mining Industry here in future
will only employ, even in the best of times, approximately
3,000 men - that number is employed at present. The registered
unemployed at the Local Government Labour Bureau is approximately
3,000. As there is no other industry to absorb these locally
they will have to leave the district, hence all competent
authorities estimate a decline in the local population from
27,000 to 17,000 approximately. Owing also to the world-wide
depression, which is being felt acutely here, resulting in poor
attendances, all local picture theatres have been forced to
shut down indefinitely. We are striving to open on the week-ends
to cater for the public amusement, but the best we hope to do
financially is to cover our current expenses and endeavour to
keep our staffs from being forced on the dole.
The nearest buildings on Chloride and Blende
Streets sides are built of stone and over ninety feet distant.
An open park is opposite on Beryl Street side. Nearest building
at rear is built of stone approximately 150 yards away. The
Fire Station is opposite in Blende Street. We are equipped with
a Western Electric installation which fully complies with all
the requirements under the Fire Underwriters Association, and
installed in such a manner that the one projection plant operates
for both screens, but can only be used on one screen at the one
time.
Here let me state that at all times and RHA all
occasions we have endeavoured to comply with every law/regulation
both local and otherwise, and during these years have entertained
hmdreds of distinguished visitors - High Government officials,
both from Sydney and every part of the World, in addition to our
local patrons, and to our knowledge have never had a serious
complaint.
For us to comply with No. 1 request of your
communications would entail heavy and expensive structural
alterations which if carried out would probably cause serious
inconvenience and confusion to the audiences in summer months in
the event of a change over during the performance, besides place
on us an almost impossible expenditure at a time when we have
been badly hit by the depression.
We have complied with the other requests as per
