INSPECTiOK, 1/ 11/ ).
An inspection was made of these premises on the 1st
November, 1955, when it was found that generally the condition
of the theatre, with several minor exceptions, was satisfactory.
In regard to the matters mentioned in the cormuunication
from the Chamber of Commerce, Kiama, there appeared to be little
cause for complaint. About five or six years ago, this theatre
was taken over by the Wollongong Theatres Pty. Ltd. when new
toilets for men and women were provided and new seating in the
circle. A new fibrous plaster ceiling has recently been erected
throughout the auditorium and a quantity of Caneite lining was
rem ove.
The new toilets are up to the best suburban standards
and the seating, though not in the same class with that of the
best city theatres, is clean and comfortable and is satisfactorily
spaced.
Exit doors and safety appliances were in order and the
premises were clean and tidy, walls and woodwork etc. painted
and reasonably attractive in appearance.
The biograph suite is one of the old type, consisting
of a biograph box and rewind room with a small svvitchroom. There
are no smoke locks in this case. Two escapes are nrovided ut
they open directly into the auditorium.
Exhaust ventilation is re'uired ta the reiird room.
Panic lighting: Electricians at the time of the inspection
were working on the new wiring and new light points for the panic
lighting. The batteries supplying the power were not operating.
Mr. Frost, a Director of the Company, was instructed to have this
panic lighting comuleted as a matter of urgency. Judging by the
number of existing points and the additional ones being installed,
the panic lighting service, when completed, should be satisfactory
and sufficient. Mr. Frost stated he would notify the Department
when this panic lightin was completed.
The hail is a general purpose one with a level floor

At the rear of the premises is an old galvanised iron
building previously used as a supper room When the premises were
used for dances.
The site is satisfactory. It has one frontage to a main
street and one to a side lane which separates the theatre from an
open public reserve.
Regarding the matter of cniidren's prograLinlies at matinees
Mr. Frost stated that children's matinees had been very poorly
patronised. The two surfing beaches, sports grounds and other
attractions may have been responsible for this. This is probably
a healthy sign.
