I have to report that in relation to the matter of
fine dust coming up off the floor whilst persons are dancing on
it, I have been approached by several persons who have complained
to me about the floor and they have shown me their clothing
after having danced on it for some time and it makes their clothing
a dirty colour. The floor is masonite and the dtst is caused
by the masonite wearing when danced on.
In relation to the Supper loom at this Hall it is
situated down under the Dance Floor and from enquiries made it
appears that the main complaints are that persons desiring to
have supper at a dance or ball have to go down steps to the supper
rooms that women preparing supper cannot leave it there overnight
owing to the fact that rats are prevalent and eat the foods the
supper room is also damp and inclined to be dusty owing to the
fact that there is no lining between the dance floor and the
supper room.
There have been complaints in relation to both
the dance hail and the supper room but they have not been official
complaints only persons mentioning the fact.
The Odfellows Hall is the only Dance Hall in Kiama
and if it were passed as not fit to be licensed in its present
state it would mean that bodies desiring to hold Rails etc. in
Kiama would not be able to do so.
To stop the dust the floor would have to be taken up
and a board floor substituted for the masonite which would involve
considerable expenditure and the supper room would require to be
lined which would also involve considerable expenditure.
My recommendations in this matter are that the
Licensee of the Hall, which is Wollongong Theatres in Wollongong,
be approached by letter from your Dept and the above facts pointed
out to them it ascertained if they will take steps to make the
Hall more satisfactory for the holding of Dances and Balls, and if
they will not, other steps taken to ve improvements made.
