On the 18th March, -1918, Mr. P. Brookfield, M.L.A.,
/ introduced to the Minister for Education a deputation, concerning the necessity for the establishment of a High School at
Broken Hill.
At present there is an enrolment of 350 pupils at the
District School, who have passed the qualifying Certificate examination, and the only accommodation for them is four rooms (belonging to the Girls' School) one cloak room, which is used for
school purposes, and three rooms at the Technical College. The
distance of the Technical College from the District is over a
mile, too far away from the school for Wicient organisation.
Land was purchased f'or a High School, and plans prepared for the building sometime ago. The site is a very good
one and quite near the present District School.
Many children
come to Broken Hill from the outlying districts to obtain a
higher education.
Some children come from as far away as White
Cliffs - a distance of 270 miles.
The population of Broken
Hill also justifies the establishment of a High School at that
centre.

Representations were also made in regard to the Alma
school, South Broken Hill.
The school ground, since the erection of the Infants' School is so restricted that something
should be done to enlarge it.
The ground is large enough but
only half of it is fenced, and it was suggested that the fence
be moved back to the end of the block, and another fence erected

of extra fencing would b rquired.
it was also suggested that
the lavatories be moved farther away from the Infants's
to.
It was stated that the present fence had almost disappeared owing to the sand-drift, and that if the sand was not re
moved the fence would soon be down altogether.
The MuAcipal
°ouncil are willing to undertake the work if the Department will
pay to haw, it done.
in reply the Minister promised to have something done
He stated that the financial year would end in
in this matter.
