It is to be noted:
(a) though the existence of 36 repeats contributes to the
increase in 2nd year enrolments, there is a 6% increase
in holding power if the repeats are omitted from
consideration.
the increase in 3rd year enrolment shows an average of
9% in holding power (71%).
the increase in 5th year enrolment is caused by an
increase of 9% in holding power (87%).
It is suggested future enrolments will be:

Fifth year enrolments have been consistently small.
Even in 1962, when a substantial increase was observed, the 5th
year enrolment represents only 13.8% of the original intake of
472 in 1958.
Conditions of employment at Broken Hill appear to be
satisfied by possession of the Intermediate Certificate.
Economic conditions at Broken Hill are depressed at the present
time, while the future of Australian metals on the world market
is at least doubtful. It may be anticipated that some pupils
will be forced to look elsewhere for employment and to command
better qualifications if they are to succeed. A steady growth
in senior school enrolments may result. In the opinion of
Geological Survey, Mines Department, and of Division of
Industrial Development, Treasury, there is no reason to fear
for the future development of Broken Hill if world market
prices recover and remain stable.
The Teachers' Federation has made representations
seeking the establishment of a second high school at Broken Hill.
