BROKEN HILL TECHNIOAL CO
On the occasion of a recent visit to Broken Hill the
urgent necessity for a Career Master and a Vocational
Guidance Co mcillor were brought under my notice by leading
business men and Mine Managers of Broken gill, sup -orted by
representations by Parents and Citizene orTianisat lone.
survy of the position at Broken Hill, a city of some
30,000 people* isolated by natural co:Aitions with practically
no outlet beyond a very limited sphere for the rising
generation* contains factors specially deserving of s • thotic
consideration. b this Department and the Department or
bour
and Industry.
I was assured by one of the lead ng mine Managers that
scrnething like 400 to 600 young people each year find it
impossible to secure employment in Broken Hill and that they
will tend to become a social liability more and more unless
effective action is ta en.
I pe rsonally sympathise and understand the views expressed
by this Deputatice. It appears to me that of all the centres
in the State, Broken Hill has first claim to vocational guidance.
The appo ntment of a Career Matiter to Broken Hill High
School is a matter of the first Importance and is referred for
early act on and presentation to the Public Service Board.
