DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTiON.Of the above cases 2 were attacked in December(11t?i and 14th respectively) last year.The renainéerhave been attacked since 2th February,1913.I examined the throatB 9f all the childrenexcept one,and took swabbings of 28 throats,Theseswabbings were submitted to bacteriological examination,when it was found that HENRY ADRSOjonorthe Head Maste4 was a "DJ,htheria Carrier", i•although he was not iii himself,he was harbouringliving bacilliin his throat.Also,two other childrenfortunately belonging to the one faxnily,viz,Gertrudeand Alfred Fury,had diphtherèid bacilli living intheir throats.12 of the 44 children, i. e, over 25,were round tohave enlarged or diseased tonsils,Notices will be sentto the parents in the ordinary way,Each child on being examined was given one or twoformaaint tablete.Although this was done to helpsterilize the throat,it also aided the examination,astne children were keen on getting the "blues",OPIN ION,At this date it is impossible to express adefinite opinion re the origin of the oitbreak,Therewere many opportunities for the first case to becomeinfected,as diphtheria is prevalent in the District,it is also impossible to say when Henry Anderson became a "Carrier",but the fact that he is a "Carrier"must have been an important factor,if not the mainfactor
