Bland Tomtar och Troll, Bauer a également
Study for the cover of the Christmas Eve 1906 issue
of Söndags-Nisses magazine (Fig. 1). The same motif
reappeared in Julstämning magazine in 1908. A 昀椀rst,
quickly sketched study is preserved in the Jönköping Lans
Museum, while a more 昀椀nished version was exhibited by
us at the Salon du Dessin in 2022 (Fig. 2). The latter is
reproduced on the magazine cover.
Little-known outside Sweden, John Bauer enjoys
extraordinary popularity in his own country, where he is
considered one of the most important artists of the early
twentieth century. His fame is due above all to his drawings
inspired by Scandinavian myths, depicting gnomes, trolls
and princes and princesses. In particular, he illustrated a
series of Swedish children’s stories entitled Bland Tomtar
och Troll (Among Gnomes and Trolls), published from
1907 onwards. His illustrations are based on an in-depth
knowledge of folk art, Sami culture and the landscapes of
northern Sweden.
Yet Bauer would have preferred to be recognized as a
painter. Spotted early for his talent, he studied at the Royal
Academy of Stockholm from 1900. While still a student,
he received his 昀椀rst commissions for illustrations and met
his future wife, Ester Ellqvist (1880-1918), also a student at
the Academy. The couple married in 1906 and took a long
trip to Italy in 1908. In 1913, his illustrations for the fairy
(Long-legged Elk and Princess Tuvstarr) were published,
probably his most famous and widely reproduced works.
The artist died at the age of thirty-six, along with his wife
and their son, on Lake Vättern in the wreck of a steamer,
the Per Brahe.
In addition to his numerous illustrations for Bland Tomtar
och Troll, Bauer also produced images for various
Christmas magazines. At the turn of the century and in the
decades that followed, Christmas magazines for children
became increasingly common. Söndags-Nisse was a humor
magazine published weekly between 1862 and 1924, when
it merged with Strix, a magazine edited by artist Albert
Engström (1869-1940).
This watercolor depicts a young woman seated at a table.
Her hair elegantly braided and dressed in a plaid dress
with an incredibly voluminous skirt, she approaches a
stick of lacquer to the warm 昀氀ame of a candle to seal a
Christmas gift. Christmas preparations are probably as
essential in Sweden as the celebrations themselves.
