JAZZ BAND - 1215 (Repeatable)

Allows students to pursue jazz music through playing and listening. Students learn a
variety of jazz music through rhythmic, harmonic, and stylistic study. Performances at
concerts and/or special events will be required. Students must also be enrolled in a larger
instrumental performance ensemble.
Prerequisite: Teacher permission
PERCUSSION TECHNIQUES – 1214 (Repeatable)

Introduces the opportunity for Nixa High School Percussion students to continue the
path of learning for percussion instruments and music specifically. Students engage in
critical investigation of various percussion related topics including, but not limited to:
Drum Set, 4-mallet technique, basic and advanced snare drum techniques, basic and
advanced timpani techniques, learning to analyze and apply techniques required to play
and participate in District and State level auditions. Students will have an opportunity to
participate and learn from the activity of small ensemble participation. Students will also
evaluate the condition of various percussion equipment and learn how to apply basic
drum head changing as well as other fundamental percussion upkeep and repair. Students
will be engaged in critical lectures and discussions aimed at elevating the students’
understanding of Percussion playing and every aspect that goes with it.
Prerequisite: Teacher permission. Enrollment in Marching Band first semester and one of three
Concert bands second semester.
INSTRUMENTAL TECHNIQUES – 1205
(Repeatable)

Introduces the opportunity for Nixa High School Instrumental students to continue the
path of learning on a more individualized track. Students will engage in a deeper study of
their instrument, as well as the opportunity for exploration in areas outside their primary
instrument if desired. Activities will include method book exploration, working with
SmartMusic, district band audition content, and solo/ensemble literature.
Prerequisite: Teacher permission. Enrollment in Marching Band first semester and one of three
Concert bands second semester.
