Our approach to RP7
In RP7, our aim is to deliver a
digital-forward energy system and
IT infrastructure that is capable of
improving the experience of our
customers and the services we provide
to our stakeholders, while supporting
a secure and sustainable transition to
DSO. Associated with this ambition
is the necessity to consider the
adequacies of our telecommunications
infrastructure and cyber security
capabilities. Together, this will require
a step change in our investment in our
IT infrastructure in the RP7 period. Our
approach to RP7 is set out in three
inter-related strategy documents.
•Digital: Our overarching Digital
Strategy sets out how we will
develop the technology, processes,
skills and tools that will enable NIE
Networks to transform customer and
employee experience throughout
RP7 and beyond. From the
adoption of new customer self-serve
technologies, to better access for
and visibility of field operations,
we will use digital as a foundation
to improve the overall services
that we provide to our customers,
employees and stakeholders.
•IT: Our IT Strategy centres around
the development of systems
and applications using ‘secureby-design’ principles to provide
increased IT and OT integration as
well as improved cyber capability.

In RP7 our focus on IT will involve
the integration of our core systems
with user-centric technologies,
enhanced cyber security services
as well as the replacement and
development of legacy applications
supporting business-critical
processes.
•Data: Our Data Strategy describes
how NIE Networks data, will be
leveraged throughout RP7 by
implementing new systems and
data collection arrangements
which are essential for a successful
transition to a DSO. By engaging
in enhanced data collection and
analytics initiatives with a key focus
on data quality, NIE Networks will
be able to provide stakeholders
with unprecedented access to
valuable information through an
Open Data Portal, as well as
drive greater business value from
network data analytics and insights.
Our IT development plans have been
built from the bottom up, focusing on
NIE Networks core business areas,
namely: Customer, Employee, Assets
and DSO. These four business
areas were used as guidelines in the
development of the IT roadmap to
ensure a systematic and rationalised
approach to IT transformation
throughout RP7.
•Customer: This involves all aspects
related to serving the customer,
and delivering a rich experience
throughout the various facets of the
customer journey.
•Employee: Equipping all
employees with the tools,
capabilities and knowledge to
execute work safely and efficiently.
•Assets: This involves the entire
asset lifecycle from planning
through to decommissioning,
including the resourcing required to
execute work.
•DSO: Ensuring the business has
the infrastructure and is organised
and resourced to effectively
transition to DSO.
The IT development plans have been
developed to enable NIE Networks
to meet our RP7 digital commitments
which are set out in the tables overleaf.
