Highlights
Storytelling builds a heightened awareness of the impact
of Indigenous Peoples’ cultural practices of reciprocity.
Nia Tero’s Storytelling team centered Indigenous creatives and
narratives in 2023 through collaborations with Indigenous storytellers
across mediums, showcasing the power of Indigenous voices in
driving social change and celebrating Indigenous cultural vitality.
Seedcast Podcast
Kin Theory
Seedcast is Nia Tero’s story-centered,
Webby-nominated podcast where we dig up,
nurture, and root stories of the Indigenous
experience from around the world. In 2023,
we completed the third season of Seedcast,
producing 65 podcast episodes to date.
The podcast secured first and second place
in the 2023 National Native Media Awards by
the Indigenous Journalists Association for our
commitment to high-quality, impactful content.
Kin Theory, an initiative of Nia Tero, is a global
Indigenous media makers database creating
media connections that support narrative
sovereignty and cultural vitality. In 2023, Kin
Theory engaged with media makers at events
globally, including film festivals like Blackstar
and Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. At Big
Sky, we hosted a DocShop panel on “Caring for
Story by Caring for Community.” Throughout
the year, we also held virtual office hours
with Kin Theory members. Additionally, the
initiative had a full visual rebrand and official
website launch.
Reciprocity Project
Facing a climate crisis, the Reciprocity Project
embraces Indigenous value systems that
have bolstered communities since the dawn
of humanity. In 2023, in partnership with
Upstander Project and REI, we completed
seven films for the project’s second season.
They were produced by Indigenous filmmakers
globally, centering on the theme of “return” to
culture and Indigenous teachings. They were
screened in multiple festivals. receiving several
awards, including the 2023 Anthem Award
and 2023 Golden Winner of Special Projects,
as well as a San Francisco/Northern California
Regional Emmy. The film “Pili Ka Mo’o” also
won a Northern California Regional Emmy.

The Wayfinders Films
In collaboration with the Wayfinders Circle,
in 2023 we completed production of seven
short films about Wayfinders Circle members.
The stories were driven by and co-produced
with the members. The films will premiere
and be distributed in 2024.
