POLICY
Impact
Highlights
Nia Tero’s policy efforts play a pivotal role in advancing the
rights and recognition of Indigenous Peoples in policy forums.
In 2023, we worked alongside Indigenous leaders and policymakers to
elevate their participation and leadership in global policy events, and in
shaping frameworks and policies prioritizing Indigenous guardianship
contributing to biodiversity protection and climate action.
Human Rights
In 2023, we supported and guided the
participation of our partners from Peru
and Colombia in the EMRIP session
focused on the impact of militarization
in Indigenous territories. Additionally,
we accompanied them during the 54th
session of the Human Rights Council. For our
partner in Colombia (OPIAC), we supported
and accompanied their participation in the
Universal Periodic Review (UPR) session,
during which Colombia was under review.
Lastly, we supported the participation of
Indigenous leaders from OPIAC and the Siona
people in the Inter-American Commission on
Human Rights (IACHR) hearing.

Kunming-Montreal Global
Biodiversity Framework
(KMGBF)
Collaborating with the International Indigenous
Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) and other
partners, we successfully advocated for
the inclusion of “respect for Indigenous
and Traditional Territories” in Target 3
of the KMGBF. This achievement highlights
the recognition of Indigenous guardianship
as a crucial strategy for protecting the Earth.
Policy Trainings
Our policy trainings, focusing on the KMGBF,
have empowered over 100 Indigenous
youth and women from 15 countries in Latin
America and the Caribbean. Collaborations
with Indigenous People Rights International
(IPRI) and the United Nations Voluntary Fund
for Indigenous Peoples (UNVFIP) extended
training programs to 50-70 Indigenous
individuals across multiple continents,
enhancing their ability to engage with
UN treaty bodies.
