AMAZONIA
Impact
Highlights
Nia Tero’s efforts in Amazonia reflect its commitment to
sustaining partnerships, influencing global movements, and
strengthening its capacity to deliver on its strategic goals
for Indigenous Peoples’ guardianship and rights. In 2023,
Nia Tero maintained our partnerships with Indigenous Peoples
living in 21 territories, funding the efforts of Indigenous Peoples’
organizations and their trusted allies to establish, strengthen,
or maintain key policies related to Indigenous guardianship.
Brazil
Collaborating closely with Brazil’s first
Ministry of Indigenous Peoples and FUNAI,
the federal agency for Indigenous affairs,
Nia Tero supported communications and
strategies to advance the implementation
of policy commitments to Indigenous
Peoples. This work supported the demarcation of eight new Indigenous lands under
President Lula’s administration, including
territories in Pará and Amazonas states.
Nia Tero supported the Univaja Surveillance
Team in carrying out territorial monitoring
in the Vale do Javari Indigenous Land,
which comprises an area the size of
Portugal. The work strengthened territorial
governance by Indigenous Peoples by
advancing infrastructure and training in
monitoring technologies, including GPS,
mapping, and drones.

Nia Tero Annual Report 2023
Nia Tero also supported Brazil’s Indigenous
Peoples in their struggle against the Marco
Temporal (time frame bill), a harmful thesis
that, if implemented in the country, could
halt the demarcation of Indigenous lands
and even reverse some of the lands that
have already been demarcated. Nia Tero
supported the Articulation of Indigenous
Peoples of Brazil’s (Apib) advocacy
campaign to raise awareness of threats
involving the bill.
Nia Tero partnered with Iepé, Imazon, and
the Legacy Landscapes Fund to provide
funding for the conservation of Greater
Tumucumaque in northern Brazil. The
agreement commits one million USD
annually for 15 years, bolstering climate
resilience efforts, protecting vulnerable
wildlife species, and supporting Indigenous
communities to sustainably and effectively
manage their lands.
