INFRASTRUCTURE & INNOVATION (CONTINUED)
SOLAR-ELECTRIC TRANSPORTATION:
Nia Tero continued its engagement
with Ecuador’s Kara Solar in the form
of financial support and technical/
entrepreneurial assistance. Our partnership amplified Kara Solar and the
Achuar people’s efforts to expand the
Achuar’s fleet of solar-electric canoes
from two initial prototypes to five
solar-electric canoes. The canoes are
operated and maintained by a fully
autonomous Achuar team. 250 trips
have been accomplished without
incident, and this exceptional reliability
bodes well for replication and scaling.

Supplemental to this, throughout 2021
co-design conversations took place
between Kara Solar, the Achuar and
six other Indigenous partners in Brazil,
Suriname, and the Solomon Islands.
Detailed plans and construction
schedules have been finalized to
prototype deployment of six new
electric boats in 2022.
