In 2021, Sky Islands Pledge efforts in the Solomon
Islands expanded to adjacent archipelagos to nurture
both previous and new partnerships, engaging over
50 customary land holding groups who are upholding
over 40% of Sky Islands areas.
Beyond Solomons, Sky Islands efforts
prevented logging in Santo, Vanuatu
and Kanaky (New Caledonia), and
the Mt Panie protected area was
expanded—a final stronghold for the
exceptional and intrinsic biodiversity
of sacred Kauri forests.
Islands work extended the Sky Islands
concept to remote and thriving atolls
across Hatohobei (including Helen
Reef) in Palau. Mala I Tolo Indigenous
Guardianship Trust is now established
as the mechanism for durable finance
and educational reform in Malaita
Province, Solomon Islands. In the
Autonomous Region of Bougainville

we established a partnership with a
key Indigenous-led organization and
are poised to engage additional
partners across over a quarter-million
hectares of Sky Islands in 2022.
Oceans work in 2021 furthered the
Tāua e Moana voyage in the Cook
Islands throughout all 15 Pa ‘Enua
(outer islands) by supporting Korero o
te Orau, Te Ipukarea Society (TIS), and
Cook Islands Voyaging Society. The
voyage is essential in realizing the 50
nautical mile marine reserve area
around all islands. Nia Tero’s Ocean
Guardianship Working Group commenced work to improve ocean
