A Global Crisis
The threat of misinformation and the need
for news literacy education extends well
beyond the United States.
The News Literacy Project’s primary mission addresses the challenge of
misinformation by empowering educators to teach students news literacy in
the United States of America. However, we recognize that this challenge — a
threat to democracies everywhere — is global in scale, and we have a role to
play in assisting others around the world who are working to expand news
literacy education in their countries.
NLP will actively promote, and seek resources (both contributed income and earned income) for, the
following limited scope of international work:
Resource sharing: All resources on our website newslit.org, including the Global Playbook, are
free for any organization anywhere to download and use.
Speaking engagements: We will gladly share our expertise and learning from over a decade in
the news literacy space with any NGOs or government offices wishing to extend an invitation.
Consulting and training: For minimal cost, NLP will engage with NGOs or government offices
wishing to enter into a contractual relationship for consulting or personnel training services
around creating a sustainable effort to teach news literacy.
Platform creation: While we will not translate the Checkology platform or allow any third
party to translate any portion of the platform, we will custom-build an online platform for any
international party with the funds necessary for such an endeavor.
International work will not replace NLP’s primary mission during the scope of this plan. Therefore, this
work will never:
•
Redirect any revenue raised for our primary mission in the United States.
•
Require any work outside the scope listed in this plan.
•
Require total revenue greater than 30% of the organization’s stated original budget in any given
fiscal year. (A portion — no more than 20% — of any revenue raised for international work must
directly support our existing infrastructure and not new expenditures.)
