NAW Women’s Rights
Abuse of women:
Let’s all be
“OVER IT”
It is 2016, and this disturbing
statistic, sadly still remains. One in
three women across the world will be
beaten or raped during their lifetime.
That’s one billion women and girls.
As in the last three years, during
February and March, thousands
of Risings, organised by the One
Billion Rising campaign, are again
taking place in hundreds of countries
across the world and within local
communities – to show the world
what one billion looks like and shine
a light on the rampant impunity and
injustice that survivors of various
forms of violence face. To highlight
the scale of the problem, and why
the NAW joins in the passion of the
One Billion and V-day campaigns,
we take you back to this Eve Esler
(the force behind One Billion Rising)
monologue, which was performed by
Thandie Newton to a packed house
at London’s famed Café de Paris
back in 2013 (pictured). Rape and
violence against women – the message
remains: We are over it!
