FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN LOADING AND DRIVINGWhen a carrier is fitted to the rearof a vehicle, it is important to considerthat this weight, being so far behindthe rear axle, could induce a rear axleoverload. (See Item 8 garage areas).6. TowingIf you wish to tow with anymotorcaravan you should:• First check that you have a licencethat allows you to tow with it (seeDriving Licences).• Confirm with the manufacturerthat the motorcaravan has beenapproved for towing and, if so, anytowing limit for the vehicle. Somevehicles have a reduced towinglimit when they are converted toa motorcaravan. It is essential thatyou check the manufacturer’s typeapproval plate for their publishedtowing limit.• Only fit an approved tow bar toyour motorcaravan. By law it mustbe marked with the UNECE R55approval number (this will carryan approval marking that includesthe type approval and the loadinglimits).7. Towing with an A-FrameAlthough use is permitted by theDepartment of Transport whilst inthe UK, such use is considered asunlawful in many countries across8 NCC Motorcaravan Guide February 2023Europe. Please ensure that youconfirm it is legal to use in thosecountries you intend to visit as failingto meet their rules may lead to yourequipment being confiscated.8. Garage areasFor motorcaravans with a large‘garage’ area at the rear, it isimportant to consider how this areais used. As this storage (‘garage’) isto the rear of the vehicle, it could bevery easy to induce an overload of therear axle.Note: Loads placed behind the rearaxle, e.g. 4, 5 & 6 above, will transferweight from the front axle to therear axle, and therefore the loadimposed on the rear axle will begreater than the extra weight of theload itself. Great care must be takennot to overload the rear axle.9. FoodIt is recommended that you buy foodonce you have arrived on the site towhich you are travelling rather thantravel with food on board to ensureyou keep your vehicles loaded masswithin the vehicles MTPLM.
