DIRECTOR’SMESSAGETackling the big challengesOur mission at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center isstraightforward: to eradicate cancer.As one of only 72 National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers inthe nation and the largest academic-based cancer research program in SouthCarolina, Hollings’ mission is to reduce the cancer burden in South Carolinaand nationally through innovative research, exceptional education and training,multidisciplinary patient care, statewide cancer prevention programs, andprogressive public policy transformation.We aim to find cures and improve the quality of life for those living with cancer.At Hollings, over 140 specialists across more than 20 academic departmentsjoin forces to study and treat cancer from diverse perspectives. Our threeresearch programs — cancer biology & immunology, cancer prevention &control, and developmental cancer therapeutics — create new and bettermethods for preventing and treating this complex disease.With an annual research funding portfolio of more than$50 million and more than 200 clinical trials, Hollingsfocuses on getting this research to where it matters most: inclinics for the benefit of cancer patients.We are truly thankful that we continue to attract thebrightest minds in research and medicine and grateful forour donors who understand how their support impactsthe lives of patients and for our elected officials andcommunity partners who make the work we do possibleacross the state.We look forward to continuing to lead the state in cancerresearch and care so that we can positively impact as manySouth Carolinians as possible.Raymond N.
